Lessons

Here at Littleriver we cater for riders of all ages and skill levels. We offer both private and group lessons on either our own riding school horses or you can bring your own.

We also offer offsite lessons on your property if you have your own horse.

We have a range of lovely school horses and ponies to suit all levels.

We believe in creating kind riders with solid foundations and well rounded education.

Good foundations are important to keep riders safe and having fun. Meaning they have the correct balance, skills and confidence for the next step.

We teach riders how horses think and communicate, how to care for them, how our body affects our horse when riding, riding in and outside an arena, riding with confidence and clear communication and more.

All our lessons are tailored to suit the rider and their goals. lessons are a mix of riding and theory to suit each individual.

Students may choose to get lessons focused on something specific i.e positive reinforcement, dressage, confidence, groundwork etc

With theory, riders learn basics of caring for the horses, gearing up, handling, catching, behavioral science etc as well as groundwork, how to teach horses new skills etc as they get more experienced.

Lessons take place in all weather conditions.

Cancellation policy: If you do not turn up for a booked lesson and do not notify us you are still liable for the full lesson fee. If you cancel within 12 hours of your lesson it will still be charged if we can't fill that spot, as we still have to pay our coaches.

Arriving for your lesson:

Riders please wear long pants (saddles can pinch bare skin if you wear shorts)

Closed shoes must be worn when around the horses and riding.

Remember no running or shouting around the ponies, they are animals and can get frights if we run around them.

If you are having weekly lessons there may come a point that you want to purchase your own riding gear.

The first thing we suggest buying is a helmet! Buy new and go try some on as each brand and type fits different heads. Here are two of the closest places we suggest going too.
Saddlery warehouse in Plimmerton
Clareville saddlery in Wairarapa

The next buy we suggest is Jodhpurs boots. Whether that's new or second hand, they are made for safety and comfort when riding.
